NME was founded in the 1950s, making it one of the oldest music magazines still in publication. During this retained, it earned the nickname "Enemy" for its often-scathing reviews. During the 1980s, NME began releasing highly influential compilation tapes long before the medium caught on. The 1990s continued this trend into the compact disc era.

In 2000, NME purchased one-time rival Melody Maker. The 2000s saw an expansion in NME's influence as the magazine broke numerous artists from the United and the UK. In 2006, NME began releasing New Musical Express Ireland, specially branded for the Irish Market. However, that magazine closed after only four months in publication.

NME maintains a New York City office with a handful of staff members. The New York branch is responsible for all United States coverage.

NME boasts comprehensive Web coverage. Though it has been available in the states online since 1996 under the UK address, the U.S. version of the site officially launched in 2007. NME's New York office has expanded with the American version of the site.
